The Home Energy Rating System
provides a standardized evaluation
of a home's energy efficiency and
expected energy costs.
Return plenums formed by
unfinished, open framing are prime
targets for high performance retrofits.
Sasha Bruce Home
Sasha Bruce Home is a group
home composed of two attached
inner city row houses.
Most air sealing efforts occur in
the attic including abandoned
chimney chases.

Florida Conducts the 2nd Most Home Energy Ratings
RESNET released statistics for the first year of their rating registry system. More Florida homes received RESNET registered energy ratings than any other state but Texas. FSEC's Deputy Director Philip Fairey said “FSEC has been an integral part of establishing the research, training and tools to create a viable rating industry in Florida for the last 23 years. Florida’s certified energy raters have shown builders that energy ratings and energy-efficiency programs help sell homes.”

Deep Energy Retrofits
Are you part of the $147 billion home improvement industry? This new Building America report examines the leadership potential for home energy raters and consultants, remodeling contractors and sub-contractors to jump start a new line of revenue in deep energy retrofits.
What is a Deep Energy Retrofit?
Check out our recent field study and best practices.
Occupant-in-Place Energy Efficiency Retrofit in a Group Home for 30% Energy Savings in Climate Zone 4
This project studies the specification, implementation, and energy savings from an energy efficiency retrofit in a group home, with an energy savings goal of 30%. This short-term test report chronicles the retrofit measures specified, their projected cost-effectiveness using building energy simulations, and the short-term test results that were used to characterize pre-retrofit and post-retrofit conditions.
Bay Ridge Gardens - Mixed-Humid Affordable Multifamily Housing Deep Energy Retrofit (DER)
Under this project, Newport Partners (as part of the BA-PIRC research team) evaluated the installation, measured performance, and cost-effectiveness of efficiency upgrade measures for a tenant-in-place DER at the Bay Ridge multifamily development in Annapolis, Maryland. The design and construction phase was completed in August 2012. This report summarizes system commissioning, short-term test results, utility bill data analysis, and analysis of real-time data collected over a one-year period after the retrofit was complete.
A Variable Refrigerant Flow Heat Pump Computer Model in EnergyPlus
This paper provides an overview of the variable refrigerant flow heat pump computer model included with the Department of Energy’s EnergyPlus™ whole-building energy simulation software. The mathematical model for a variable refrigerant flow heat pump operating in cooling or heating mode, and a detailed model for the variable refrigerant flow direct-expansion cooling coil are described in detail.
