The Florida event is comprised of two parts, the academic competition and the model hydrogen fuel cell car demonstration, the Hands-On Hydrogen race. The academic portion is a fast-paced question and answer contest during which students answer questions about earth science, physical science, life science, math and general science. Each of the top eight teams receive hydrogen fuel cell car kits to be used in the car demonstration portion of the competition. Each team has several weeks to construct a hydrogen car using their kit. Performance and construction of their vehicle will be demonstrated at follow-up event held during the EnergyWhiz Olympics. The team that placed first in the academic portion must demonstrate a hydrogen model car that crosses the finish line to become the overall winner of the FSEC Middle School Science Bowl.
The first, second and third place teams receive trophies and ribbons. The members and mentor from the top science bowl team receive an all expense paid trip to compete in a national competition.
