A presentation about green building techniques appropriate for Florida homes.

Identify Intended Target Group

Course is designed for residential builders, architects, subcontractors, energy raters, building officials, utility representatives or those in related fields. The general public may also benefit from the course.

Overall Goal

Educate students about green building techniques and the Florida Green Building Coalition Home Standard.

Specific Behavioral Objectives

Have them become sufficiently knowledgeable to understand the various components of the standard and to certify the "General" category of the standard's checklist.

Method of Presentation

Slide and either overheads or powerpoint presentation, video, and class participation through instructor questions and discussion.

Eric Martin

Eric D. Martin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (1994) and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering (1996), both from the Florida Institute of Technology. Mr. Martin is currently a Research Engineer at FSEC where he continues his research in the areas of detoxification, hydrogen, and the built environment. His hydrogen research has included design, optimization, and simulation of stand-alone renewable hydrogen energy systems. His buildings research includes water/wastewater conservation and re-use, community redevelopment, and energy analysis of new and existing buildings. One particular project involved investigating the physical and financial links of applying both energy efficiency and disaster mitigation retrofits to existing buildings. Mr. Martin recently chaired the development of a residential green building program for the state of Florida, and assists builders with its implementation through the US Department of Energy's Building America Program. Mr. Martin has collaborated on numerous publications and five pending patents in the area of environmental remediation.

Robin K. Vieira

Mr. Vieira has over 20 years of experience in hot, humid climate research. He has been the principal investigator for over 2 million dollars of contracts and grants from industry, foundations and state and federal agencies. He has led research efforts in residential auditing and field evaluation work, survey and statistical work, and computer simulation and analysis work. Rob has presented over 40 workshops and seminars on sustainable development and energy-efficient construction to developers, builders, designers and others in the energy & environmental & development fields. He has written papers for diverse audiences, e.g., Transportation Quarterly, Florida Planning, and ASHRAE Transactions, and was the primary author of one book, Energy-Efficient Florida Home Buildings. Rob leads FSEC's involvement in providing technical support to Southeastern builders for EPA's Energy Star Homes Program and has directed the work on the cost-benefit optimization, improvement analysis and system sizing features of the State of Florida's residential code and rating software. He was chair of the organizing committee of the Florida Green Building Coalition. Mr. Vieira has a B.A. in Physics, an M.S. in Applied Solar Energy and an MBA.
